I agree. If you want to carry, get the permit. Guns freak people out.

I have a buddy that tries to open carry everywhere, and constantly complains about being asked to leave restaurants, stores, etc.. What a pain in the ass that must be.

I'm guessing from the way the dude is dressed, that he might be federal law enforcement, or a US Marshall or some shit like that.

There's a big federal firearm training range out west off of Rt66, I believe.

I actually thought the same thing, but he had no visible identification of any kind. If he was going low key, sure, but then the gun defeats the purpose. No law enforcement with a gun wants to be mistaken for a civilian with a gun, that's backwards.

Maybe because I've lived here so long, open and concealed carry on the regular it doesn't phase me.

He's dressed respectfully, it's a modest gun (not an AR or 8 inch barrel revolver (I've seen it...)) and it doesn't look like he's buying booze.

few points: I carry all the time, everywhere, unless the law says I can't (bars, banks, etc). 60% of the time I conceal carry because A I'm licensed to do so and B I understand seeing someone with a gun, even the gentleman posted, makes people nervous. The other 40% of the time it's because my Ruger is too big and uncomfortable to conceal carry. (My conceal carry is a snubnose Taurus revolver). Will I wear a polo instead of band tshirt if I open carry? Of course. Do I bring a 9 rd magazine instead of my 15? Of course. Hell I even keep my wallet in my back left pocket because I carry on my right so people don't mistake hand movements towards said firearm.

It's the norm here really. I tend to make sure I'm not open carrying when I go into a place of business or where there's a lot of people. But even going into a 711 if you smile, say hi to the clerk when they greet you it closes off any misconception they may have about you.

Didn't mean to post hijack but wanted to provided a both sides response (understanding others' point of view while providing a non-2nd amendment-preaching, pro-carry opinion)

Edit: also it does make a nice arm rest like the guy has there.

I like discussing carry vs non carry with people (I open and conceal) but I agree with you, I hate the shitstorms they turn into. The people going on about 2nd amendment rights and "you can't take err guns!" make me want to avoid the discussion altogether for fear of being lumped in with them.

10/30/2014 at 15:10

I agree with you mostly, here is where I don't:

1- open carry laws do not discriminate based on race, ethnicity, or clothing choice. If you can open carry wearing a polo, I can open carry wearing a Rick Ross Thug Life T-shirt and baggy jeans. One is not more lawful than the other and should be treated as such. Since that's clearly not the case in real life, open carry is stupid. It really means "respectable white people can openly carry hand guns".

2- I rarely ever see anyone open carry, especially not an AR. Like ever.

Also, I want to add that I totally agree on CC permits, they make total sense and that's the way to go if you want to carry. Open carry imho is dumb.

Youre totally right. Open carry laws don't discriminate and I've seen every quality of person open carry. Used to work at Verizon and had Bubba Joe come in to the store with some overalls, a filthy beater shirt and a massive revolver hanging off his belt - it would swing when he walks and could knock someone out. Even then knowing he just wanted his phone worked on, it even made me a little uncomfortable because he looked like he couldn't be trusted with it.

The AR is a bit of an exaggeration but it is perfectly legal to carry one if it is easily identified as unloaded. There is no reason to ever need to carry a rifle, shotgun, bow, crossbow, katana, etc other than to scare people. But those are legal to do so (but I think the crossbow law is iffy).

I will say I am in favor of having a 2 stage license - Level 1 means you can open carry a sidearm and have to go through a gun safety course. Level 2 is safety course plus stricter background check (I'm all for background checks when purchasing... But that only works for legal purchases) and allows for concealed carry.

I'm all for banning the public carry of assault rifles and hunting rifles (even though a hand gun can do just as much damage) because they are only carried by people that want to test the law or intimidate people.

Virginia carry law says as long as it's not concealed.

I'm pretty sure the only "you really can't carry, even openly" weapons are automatic weapons, explosives, flame throwers, etc.

I know as a Brit what I say on this means f**k all to people in the U.S. but does he need his gun in public? Wallet, yes it holds money, driving licence and credit/debit cards, etc... Car keys, well doh, yes because I need them for my car. Comb, you may need to comb your hair if you're out and about either wind messes it up or a friend comes up and takes the pi55 out of you for something and ruffles your hair. Mobile phone, yes to phone people and have them able to phone me when I'm outside the house or to catch up with what's happening on Twitter/Facebook/Instagram/etc... for sat nav use, camera and whatever else your mobile phone can do. Gun, erm, well, okay, defend from attack, well actually the vast, I mean VAST majority of the world uses the police and camera tv operators for that purpose. If in a gun situation, keep your head down and ride the situation out till it is either over or trained individuals bring it to a conclusion.

As I say what I wrote here is going to mean nothing to many people so please don't bombard me with 'because 'Muricah f**k yeah', 'shut up you limey f**k', 'commie bast**d', 'because frredom', etc...

Thanks I agree you wholeheartedly. His being there with a weapon strapped attached to his waist is an exercise in poor judgement to me in that it's mere presence will cause an atmosphere.

He doesn't really need his weapon on him. The U.S. has so many lines of defence that if another country gets passed them all, then let them just have the ruddy place if not for all the effort they've put in. Canada is hardly likely to invade (read not likely to invade whatsoever) and Mexico, well they have shown they can come and go pretty freely anyway according to what some of the southern states are saying.

So many times I've been told that good people need to carry guns because of all the bad people with guns. I was really concerned for a friend after a young lad the other week opened fire at a school in Marysville, WA and my friend and her daughter live relatively nearby (as it turns out not as nearby as I originally thought). Now this lad wasn't a bad person until he opened fire at school, up until that moment he was a good person.

Just because a state allows people to do it doesn't mean people have to do it or that it's really okay to do it by and with people around others.

I can go out in public naked (god forbid, it's not a pretty sight) and it be legal up to the point it offends people and then I could be done for indecency.

If you want to walk about in temperatures we have in the U.K. you're very brave, but also 'up to the point it offends people', which is my point, so you could walk for quite a while with some people laughing, pointing, taking pictures and/or generally saying 'hi, it's a bit cold for that isn't it, but hey it's up to you fella' before someone says, 'I take offence to seeing his junk in public, I'm calling the police'. So why do something that is most likely or evenly likely to cause offence even if it is legal.

I'm kind of worried now that people think that I'm anti-gun... nope I'm not. TBH I support (responsible) gun ownership, as long as the owner is capable of reason (AKA not *mentally ill*) and logic. Both of my parents have CCW permits, so I'm perfectly used to weapons, but yes, Open Carry is stupid! The only people who do it are those too lazy to get a CCW or can't get one, and those who like to show off and intimidate...
